David Amram might be the most accomplished composer of our times with the least amount of recognition. Artists such as saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Horace Silver, drummer Art Blakey and trumpeter Lee Morgan actually started this music during the mid '50s, and helped usher in what is now the predominant form of jazz. The second population of revivalists consisted of young musicians such as the Lu Watters band. Ellington himself was aware of this and was trying to distance himself from swing music. I have already pointed out the use of polyphony in Ligeti's "Lontano." More accurately, it's a five piece ensemble (give or take one or two depending on the song) anchored by the piano and bandoneon that uses the idea of jazz (mostly) and tango (less so) as a queue to push beyond the boundaries of either genre. Many bass players use a wooden bow threaded with horse hair to play melodies, but some prefer to use their fingers to pluck the strings.

In the D Dorian mode, the tonal center is D. To me, there are only a few genres: Agree with most of it, but SOAD is good!! Yet in other periods of musical history receiving influence from progressive rock could really set a band apart and make them worthy of our prog-related category. A recording strike during 1942-44, a prohibitive entertainment tax (which closed many dance halls) and the growing popularity of pop singers doomed the big bands, and the elimination of dance floors at many clubs made jazz into a music strictly for listening By being uplifted to the level of an art music, jazz was isolated from the pop music world and saw its audience shrink drastically as other simpler styles rushed in to fill the gap.
