In fact, nuclear fusion reactions are responsible for the energy output of most stars, including our own Sun. For example, in internal conversion decay, the energy from an excited nucleus may eject one of the inner orbital electrons from the atom, in a process which produces high speed electrons, but is not beta decay, and (unlike beta decay) does not transmute one element to another. Capture involves the addition of the neutron to the uranium nucleus to form a new compound nucleus.

In alpha decay, a positively charged particle, identical to the nucleus of helium 4, is emitted spontaneously. At eastern Honshu’s Fukushima Daiichi power plant, one of the 25 largest nuclear power stations in the world, all operating units shut down automatically when the quake hit, showing no significant damage.

Particle physics deals primarily with the interactions of particles outside of an atom or nucleus. Becquerel therefore calls the new radiation "uranic rays". This time, the discrepancy was not between different estimates of the sun's age, but rather between predictions based upon a widely accepted theory and direct measurements of particles produced by nuclear burning in the sun's interior. In the 1950s accelerators had reached energies of 20-30 GeV and earlier methods were inadequate; for the Wilson chamber the path lengths in the gas would have been excessive.

The number of neutrons and the specific fission products from any fission event are governed by statistical probability, in that the precise break up of a single nucleus cannot be predicted. Researchers work at many of the world’s premier research laboratories including Argonne National Lab, CERN, Fermilab, Brookhaven National Lab, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The fission and other cross-sections increase greatly as the neutron velocity reduces from around 20,000 km/s to 2 km/s, making the likelihood of some interaction greater.
